Adopt an Armadillo

Armadillo means "little armored one" which refers to the thick leathery shells that cover most of its body. There are 20 varieties of armadillo which all live in Latin America with the exception of the nine-banded armadillo that includes the U.S. in its range. Armadillos are closely related to anteaters and sloths and live in temperate and warm habitats. Cold weather is their enemy because of their low metabolic rate and lack of fat stores. Armadillos have very poor eyesight and use their keen sense of smell and long claws for digging to hunt for beetles, ants, termites, and other insects. Due to habitat loss and over-hunting, some of the armadillo species, including the pink fairy armadillo are now on the Endangered Species list. Adopt an armadillo today!
