Adopt a Florida Panther

The Florida panther is a subspecies of cougar, a large cat also known as the puma or mountain lion. Originally the widest ranging mammal in the Western hemisphere, the species was present throughout most of North America and South America. By the 20th century, the U.S. cougar was restricted primarily to the mountains of the West and southern Florida in the East. The animals had been wiped out of most of their range by uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss. Special recovery efforts have helped the Florida panther population grow from 30 to 70 animals today. However, habitat loss continues to be a serious threat. NWF is working to ensure that cougar habitat in Florida is protected and we need your help. Adopt a Florida panther today!
