Adopt a Great Gray Owl

The great gray owl is the tallest American owl with the largest wingspan. They can be found in boreal forests and western mountains and prey on small mammals, especially rodents. They have excellent hearing and can locate prey beneath a snow covered surface in the light or in the dark. Great grays will plunge headfirst into deep snow using their ice-pick talons tucked under their chins to snatch prey. The great gray owl will nest in the tops of broken-topped trees or in nests of other bird species. They can become very aggressive and will attack anything that gets too close to their young. The harvest of timber from the great gray owl's habitat is one the greatest threats to this species. Help NWF in its efforts to protect and recover the wild places that sustain wildlife.
