Adopt a River Otter

The North American river otter is a member of the weasel family. Weighing up to 30 pounds and growing up to 36 inches long, river otters are beautifully adapted to life in the water. Uncontrolled hunting in the 1700s and 1800s reduced river otter populations across much of North America. Today, pollution and destruction of wetland and streams have hindered otters’ recovery. Although the animals can survive in virtually any body of water, from rivers and creeks to lakes and even coastal waters, river otters now are found mainly across the northern tier of states, along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and in parts of Canada. In some areas, state wildlife agencies have re-established the animals in habitats where they had disappeared long ago. By adopting a river otter, you are helping to restore the rivers and wetlands which are so important for this North American species to survive. Adopt a river otter today!
