Adopt a Brown Pelican

The brown pelican, the state bird of Louisiana, was removed from the endangered species list just last year but now faces new threats caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. This rare bird is the only pelican that lives strictly in coastal habitats and never ventures more than 20 miles inland or out to sea. They nest in colonies on offshore barrier islands and unlike many birds; pelicans incubate their eggs with their webbed feet. Brown pelicans feed on mid-size fish that they capture by diving headfirst into the water. They have excellent eyesight and can spot their prey from 60 feet above the water surface. Help NWF in its efforts to protect and recover the wild places that sustain wildlife. Adopt a brown pelican today!
