Adopt a Bison

The bison, or American buffalo, once roamed across a large part of North America. By the 1880's however, bison had been nearly wiped out by uncontrolled hunting and loss of habitat. A handful survived in Yellowstone National Park, the last wild herd in the United States. Today, about 500,000 bison live in the US, including the only free-ranging herd, about 4,000 animals in the Yellowstone area. Although, no longer endangered, the bison stands as a warning that even the largest land mammal in North America needs conservation. The National Wildlife Federation works with its members, supporters and caring people everywhere to protect and recover the wild places that sustain wildlife as well as the human spirit.
