Adopt a Bald Eagle

Bald eagles call the entire North American continent above Mexico their range. You are likely to see an eagle near a large body of water with nearby old growth forests. The largest populations are in Alaska during the late fall and the Mississippi Valley in the winter. Bald eagles are large raptors unique to North America and prefer to eat fish, but also feed on small mammals and waterfowl. During the 1970’s, bald eagles were added to the Endangered Species list after their population was devastated by the effects of pollution. Pesticides, such as DDT, built up in the food chain and collected in top predators like the bald eagle. Thanks to the work of scientists, activists and writers, such as Rachel Carson, bans were placed on dangerous pesticides and the bald eagle was able to make a strong recovery. It was recently taken off the Endangered Species list. Help NWF in its efforts to protect and recover the wild places that sustain wildlife. Adopt a bald eagle today!
